Product attributes control the majority of your catalogs functions. Explore how they work here

You can show images for each option in a product attribute! To do so, upload an image at the option level in the table. 

That is a setting in the product itself called "image position." If you choose "bottom" then the attribute images will appear below the dropdown selection. If you choose "middle" the image will appear above the dropdown selection:
