Product validations

Build validations in Allmoxy that warn a customer or stop an order when their answers don't fit: conditional groups, operators, messages with images, and what customers see.

A validation is a rule on a product that checks the customer's answers. When the rule matches, Allmoxy either shows a warning and lets the order continue, or shows an error and stops it. Build them on the product's Validations tab by describing the answers you do not want to pass.

Applies to: every shop with its own catalog. You need the Manage Catalog permission.

The two kinds of validation

  • Alert but continue shows a yellow warning. The customer can still save and submit the order.
  • Alert and stop processing shows a red error. The customer has to fix the answer before the order can go ahead.

Customers see both. Yellow warnings are for things worth a second look (an unusual size); red is for things you can't build.

Build a validation

An expanded validation: one conditional group, the action and the message

  1. Open the product and click the Validations tab, then Add Validation.
  2. Enter a Validation Name and leave Active ticked.
  3. In Conditional Groups, click Add Condition. Pick an attribute or a part value (such as a part's Width), an operator (Equals, Is less than, Is less than or equal to, Is greater than, Is greater than or equal to, Is not equal to), and a value. Leave the third dropdown on Use Number Field to type the value in, or choose another attribute to compare against, so "Width is greater than Height" is a valid condition.
  4. Add more conditions to the group, or Add Conditional Group for a separate set.
  5. In the action, choose Alert but continue or Alert and stop processing, then write the message. Change the message type to Image URL to show a picture instead; paste the address of an image hosted elsewhere (there's no upload here).
  6. Tick Only show this validation once per group if the message should appear once for a group of items rather than on every item.
  7. Save.

Describe what should fail, not what should pass. A rule "Width is greater than 48, alert and stop" blocks doors wider than 48.

To change an existing validation, click the arrow next to it to open its conditions.

How groups combine

Inside one conditional group, any true condition makes the group true (OR). Across groups, every group has to be true for the action to fire (AND). So to stop an order when the width is over 48 and the style is Raised Panel, put those two conditions in separate groups. To stop it when either is true, put them in one group.

What the customer sees

The message appears on the product on the order page as soon as the answers match. A yellow warning lets them carry on. A red error has to be cleared before the order can move forward. If Allow Validation Errors on Bids is turned on at Settings > E-Commerce > Order Settings, customers can still save a bid with red errors on it, so they don't lose their work, but they can't turn it into an order until the errors are fixed. Otherwise they have to fix the errors before they can save.

Turn All On at the top of the tab re-activates every validation on the product after you've switched some off for testing.

Things to know

  • Validations run on internal use products too, and on products inside a component.
  • An image message must be a working URL or the tab won't save.
  • Test as a customer. Add the product to a test order and try the answers you expect to fail.
  • Validations check one product, not the order. They can't look at the order total or the shipping method, so a message like "delivery orders under $500 ship batched" can't switch off once the order passes $500. To show a standing message, add an Alert but continue validation to the products it applies to, or put the note in the name of the shipping method customers choose.
